Abstract

This paper explores the transient and multifaceted nature of identity through photography, with a focus on family, third spaces, and self-reflection. Through three interconnected series—Through His Eyes, In-Between New York, and Twenty Something—the project examines how personal relationships and environments shape identity, particularly during transitional moments in life. Drawing on autobiographical storytelling, the paper highlights generational dynamics themes, communal spaces’ role, and the liminal space between adolescence and adulthood. Influenced by theorists such as Roland Barthes and sociologist Ray Oldenburg, the work also engages with ideas of memory, belonging, and the fluidity of identity, inviting viewers to reflect on their own experiences of self-discovery and transformation.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
