Abstract
This thesis examines the effects of sociological postmodernism on heritage sites around the world, drawing from semiology to characterize tourism as a mode of visual and cultural consumption. Using a case study approach, I examine how artistic and architectural hallmarks of culture are recontextualized within a postmodernist discursive framework to create hyperreal contemporary touristic encounters through the imposition of semiotic narratives.
