Abstract

In November 2008, California voters passed Proposition 8, a ballot proposal that sought to ban same-sex marriage in the state. The campaign for Proposition 8 incorporated both secular and religious arguments into its rationale, attempting to build support among a wide swath of voters. TheCall San Diego was a religious event that coincided with a fasting and prayer campaign in support of Proposition 8. TheCall San Diego provides insight into how Proposition 8 functioned as a unique vehicle through which religious and political actors sought to build political power. Using news articles and analysis of the Proposition 8 campaign, my research explores how specific actors framed arguments that structured grievances and built an audience for the ballot measure.
