Abstract

This interview-based study explores the possibilities of establishing an Environmental Analysis (EA) major at Scripps College. Conducted as part of a Senior Capstone project, the research is based on 34 interviews with students, alumni, and faculty across the Claremont Colleges. The findings indicate significant student interest in EA at Scripps despite the absence of a dedicated department or tenure-track faculty. Interviews indicate a lack of academic support, community cohesion, and access to resources for EA students at Scripps. The study also examines comparable models at other liberal arts colleges. In conclusion, it identifies existing opportunities, such as the newly awarded Fletcher-Jones Chair in Computational Studies and the existing intercollegiate structure, as starting points for building an EA department at Scripps. It presents two proposals: a modest single-faculty hire and a robust departmental build-out. Ultimately, the report argues that institutional investment in an EA program at Scripps is both feasible and critical to supporting student success and academic equity within the consortium.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
