Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted special education, particularly for children with developmental disabilities, as it illuminated the unique challenges they faced in remote learning environments. This study aims to examine how the shift to remote learning during the pandemic affected the academic performance and development of children with developmental disabilities, focusing on the specific challenges they encountered. A mixed-methods approach will be used, combining a comparative analysis of educators’ responses from the EDUCAUSE survey with an examination of publicly available academic records for students with developmental disabilities. Data from interviews with educators will be analyzed using a framework analysis to explore the effects of the transition to remote learning on students. The study is expected to reveal a notable decline in academic performance for students with developmental disabilities during remote learning compared to their pre-pandemic achievements. The findings from this research could provide valuable insights into the development of effective and inclusive remote learning strategies tailored to meet the unique needs of children with developmental disabilities.
