Abstract
In 1942, Peter F. Drucker was invited by Alfred Sloan to study General Motors, and Drucker agreed, despite the warnings of his academic colleagues that the project would derail his academic career. As Drucker said later, it was as though he had embarked on a solitary journey to map “the dark continent of management” (Anon 2005). His journey of exploration gave birth to the field of management (Drucker 1946). This journey came to an end only when he passed away on November 11, 2005 at age 95.
