Abstract

Freedom of the press has always been a vital part of American democracy. Without the press, the very idea of self-governance and deliberation would be at stake, for it is these two qualities of the press that bring life to democracy. However, as of 2019, the protection of the press is not viewed as an essential feature of democracy. This change began after the 2016 presidential election of Donald Trump, where the country saw an increase in non-traditional politics. This thesis focuses on how President Donald Trump has successfully made the press seem like the "enemy of the people," and looks at the steps required to save the press and democracy itself.

This thesis is restricted to the Claremont Colleges current faculty, students, and staff.
