Abstract

This is a study of how Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has influenced and impacted Indian cinema. Through this paper, I have analyzed themes like moderate love, familial acceptance, and the complicated portrayal of women present across the play as well as the Bollywood films. Even though these artistic works have been created across different times, geographical boundaries, and societal set-ups, the fundamentals of human emotions and reactions, that these stories project, continue to remain constant. Overall, this project is a self-exploration of my Indian cultural heritage juxtaposed with my modern-western education at Claremont McKenna College.
