Abstract
TSMC was founded in 1987, and from the late 1990s to date has been the leading foundry firm. Part I reviews the literature to explain TSMC’s continued success. I describe how the Taiwanese government helped found the Taiwan semiconductor industry and nurtured TSMC. Then I explain how TSMC’s specialization in manufacturing semiconductors, a general- purpose technology, and patents allow TSMC to innovate. The results suggest that the government was vital in supporting TSMC’s rise. Part II is a financial analysis of TSMC to see how their financials, leadership, and strategy position TSMC against competition and other geopolitical events.
