Information for Authors

The guidelines on this page are intended to aid authors in formatting and submitting their work in a manner consistent with the Journal’s policies. Please contact the editors if you have any questions.

Before You Submit

All submissions to Mime Journal should be made online using the online submission form. Before submitting, please make sure you have ALL the items on the checklist below. Incomplete submissions will be returned to authors for revision before any further consideration of merit for publication.

Note: If the primary submission is not in manuscript format (i.e. not a text document), but is in another form of media (video, audio, etc.), please consult with the editors for appropriate submissions guidelines.

Pre-submission checklist:

  • Ensure that material submitted for publication is not:
    • previously published
    • submitted elsewhere for publication
    • under review for another journal
  • Confirm all authors listed on the submission meet the requirements for authorship outlined in the journal’s policies.
  • Obtain written consent and copyright permission from all individuals or institutions for all materials and media used by the author(s).
  • Submit a separate cover letter in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) or in RTF format, addressing the appropriateness of the submission for publication in Mime Journal. The cover letter should list all co-authors (as applicable).
  • Write and submit an informative abstract of 250 words or less about your article or submission.
  • Check that references and citations adhere to conventions of the current edition of the Modern Language Association (MLA) Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing. Quick reference on MLA Style may also be found online at Purdue OWL: MLA Formatting and Style Guide.
  • Check and make any necessary corrections for spelling, grammatical, and typographical errors.
  • Check formatting guidelines for illustrations, figures, image, audio, and video media files. Prepare media files for upload separately, not embedded in the manuscript. Label media files appropriately and in sequence. Indicate clearly on the manuscript where these files are to be inserted.

Preparing Your Manuscript

For manuscript text and tables, our preferred file format is Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx). We also accept files submitted in RTF format. Please include tables as part of the manuscript file, but do not include image files, photos, or illustrations.

Paper copies and submissions in hard copy are not accepted.

Note: If the primary submission is not in manuscript format (i.e. not a text document), but is in another form of media (video, audio, etc.), please consult with the editors for appropriate submissions guidelines.

Copyediting

As a no-fee, open access publication, Mime Journal’s ability to provide extensive copyediting of manuscripts is limited. Authors are expected to submit manuscripts free of major typographical and grammatical errors, and may be requested to perform additional editing on their manuscripts if it is deemed necessary.

Layout

Please submit manuscripts in the standard layout outlined below.

  • Page size, US Letter, 8.5 inches x 11 inches
  • Margins, 1 inch all around
  • Font and size, 12 pt, Times Roman
  • Line spacing, double-spaced
  • Paragraphs, Left justified, single column
  • Do not use headers and footers in the page

First page of the manuscript [text] must bear the title of the paper. Headings, sub-headings, and general organization of the article should follow conventions of the current edition of the Modern Language Association (MLA) Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing. Quick reference on MLA Style may also be found online at Purdue OWL: MLA Formatting and Style Guide.

Citations and References

In general, the style should follow the in-text parenthetical citation format described in the Modern Language Association (MLA) Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing.

Please do not use footnotes and endnotes for citation purposes (refer to MLA Citation Style). Use notes only for supplemental comments or narrative asides.

Do not use Microsoft Word’s Footnote or Endnote features. Instead, please insert footnotes in regular text at the end of the article. If your paper contains fifteen (15) or more footnotes, they should be inserted in regular text in a separate Notes section immediately before the Works Cited/References section.

Quick reference on organizing MLA Style citations may also be found at Purdue OWL: MLA Formatting and Style Guide, which is freely available online.

In-text hyperlinks to references or supplemental material are optional but welcome. If the references are to be cited, please follow the citation format for electronic sources described in the Modern Language Association (MLA) Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing. A description of the format may also be found at Purdue OWL: MLA Formatting and Style Guide: Electronic Sources.

Please include a list of links at the end of your manuscript document, after Notes and References. The Links list should include the title or text linked, the page(s) on which the link appears, and the full URL of the link.

Bibliography and Works Cited

The accuracy and completeness of references are the responsibility of the author. Failure to submit accurate and properly formatted references may delay review and publication. References to unpublished material may be included. If such material may be of help in the evaluation of the paper, copies should be made available to the editor.

Figures, Illustrations and Media

Images, figures and other pictorial content should be submitted as separate files from the manuscript text file, and in a form suitable for reproduction online. Color images and figures should be at least 300 dpi; black-and-white line images should be 1200 dpi.

As appropriate, authors are encouraged to submit supplementary audio-visual materials (videos, screencasts, etc.) to illustrate the techniques or practices discussed in their articles. Videos will be posted alongside published articles.

Note: If subjects other than the author(s) are pictured in the video, signed releases from the video participants will be required before videos are posted to the journal website.

Illustrations/Photographs: Images (either for inclusion in the manuscript or supplementary files) should be submitted as separate, high quality, uncompressed image files (no lower than 300 dpi) in either .EPS, .GIF, .TIFF, .PNG, or .JPG format . Image file names should be as precise as possible, and a corresponding marker should be placed within the manuscript to identify preferred placement of each image. Image captions, as appropriate, should be included in square brackets in the manuscript immediately following the marker. Mime Journal will make every effort to place images in the preferred position in the text, but the editors reserve the right to move, crop, or resize images as needed to achieve a balanced layout.

Multimedia (Audio or Video): Multimedia files (either as primary submissions or supplementary files) should be submitted as separate high quality files. Audio files should be in either .WAV, .AIF/.AIFF or .MP3 format. Video files should be in either .AVI, .MP4 or .MOV format. If a multimedia file is not explicitly referenced in the manuscript, please give instructions for how it is to be used in your cover letter.

If you wish to submit multimedia files in alternative formats from those listed above, please consult the editors prior to submission.

Figures and Tables: All figures (charts/graphs) should be submitted as Microsoft Excel (.xls or .xlsx) files. Multiple charts/graphs may be submitted as separate Excel files, or may be submitted as separate worksheets in one Excel workbook file. All tables should be submitted as a separate Word file (.doc or .docx). Multiple tables may be included in the same Word file.

Figures and tables should be clearly labeled, with appropriate captions listed directly under each figure or table. There should be clear markers within the manuscript to identify the placement of each figure/table.

Other Supplementary Files: Data files, code, executable programs and other file types may also be submitted as supplementary files. If you would like to submit a file type not addressed here, please contact the editors.
