Abstract

God is number seventeen on my mother’s to-do-list. He is one minor entry on her litany of thankless, unavoidable obligations that no one asked her to take on. She treats God like Ms. Gatnik, a widow who lives in the untrimmed, mossy brick house at the end of our street. When my mother realizes too much time has passed, she invites God over for coffee, bringing him the least-chipped mug on our shelf. My mother only shares what is necessary to meet the minimum requirements. Like God, Ms. Gatnik has lived through wars and forgiven undeserving sinners. My mother opens herself to both of their wisdom, but does not expect any gifts in return.
