Abstract
Culturally responsive teaching has the power to improve the educational experience of BIPOC students facing educational oppression. I began this project as a way to try to understand how this might be the case. In this paper, I explore culturally responsive teaching from multiple perspectives. First, I approach this topic as a researcher. Based on a review of the literature, I provide a comprehensive description of my understanding of the meaning of culturally responsive teaching. I investigate the pedagogical theories developed by the founders of the field and explore how teachers put them into practice. I also outline my understanding of the landscape of social and emotional Learning (SEL), and the connections between CRT and SEL. Next, I approach this topic as an aspiring educator: I have developed a curriculum that presents SEL through a culturally responsive pedagogical lens, aimed at second-grade students. Finally, I approach this topic as an advocate. I felt the most productive way to use this knowledge was to share it with fellow educators. I have created a guide for teachers to support them in implementing my curriculum and developing as culturally responsive educators.
